Mipro Oy has been selected to deliver centralised traffic control system for the first commercial railway section of the Digirail project.

Mipro Oy will deliver Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) system for the first commercial ERTMS/ETCS track section (EKA) of the Digirail project, covering the Lielahti–Rauma/Pori line in Finland. The contract was signed with Fintraffic Railway Ltd. The purpose of Digirail project is to align train control systems with the EU’s common railway traffic requirements.

Mipro has been selected as the supplier of Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) for the first commercial rail section (EKA) of the Digirail project. The project covers the Digirail EKA section from Lielahti to Rauma/Pori. The CTC system is used to manage and control rail traffic on the railway section. The system is planned to be designed, manufactured, and deployed for testing and operational use between 2025 and 2027.

“The new Centralised Traffic Control system is a significant step for us towards the future of both Finnish and European railway systems. It is a privilege to be at the forefront of future development, and I look forward to leveraging the opportunities that EKA CTC offers to deliver even higher quality services to railway customers”, says Project Manager Jenni Petrelius from Fintraffic Railway Ltd.

The Digirail project will modernise Finland’s train traffic control system, making it safer, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. By adhering to EU standards and implementing the European Train Control System (ETCS), the project will integrate Finland’s railways more closely with the rest of European network. The initiative leverages advanced radio network technology and cybersecurity solutions, while also strengthening Finnish innovation expertise on international markets.

“Digirata is bringing a comprehensive technological transformation to the entire railway network, and with the procurement of the Centralised Traffic Control system, we are building the foundational traffic control capabilities for the first commercial railway section. We have previously worked successfully with Mipro in the development of traffic control and management systems. I look forward to working together with Mipro to create future solutions for the EKA railway section. We are moving Finland toward safer, more cost-efficient, and smoother railway traffic.”, says Director of Digirail Jari Pylvänäinen.

The Centralised Traffic Control project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Digirail’s Centralised Safety System project (CSS) and the Object Controller System project (OCS). Previously, Mipro was selected as the supplier of Object Controller system for the EKA project.

“For Mipro, delivering the Centralised Traffic Control system for the first EKA railway section of the Digirail project is a significant step in the implementation of the ERTMS system in Finland. The EKA CTC system will control all functionalities of the Centralised Safety System and display all its indications. Mipro has also been selected to implement the Object Controller System for the EKA railway section, which will control and manage all safety system elements on the railway section. As a domestic company, we are extremely proud to contribute to such a significant modernisation of railway traffic control and management in our country.” says Mipro’s Business Unit Director Jari Pylvänen.

The Centralised Traffic Control system enables centralised monitoring and control of traffic on the EKA railway. The system supports indications compliant with the European ETCS train control system and manages all ETCS functionalities, such as temporary speed restrictions (TSR), work zones, and many other ETCS features. Additionally, the system includes an optional trackside functionality for Automatic Train Operation (ATO-TS). The decision to implement the ATO option will be made by the client at a later stage.

Mipro’s system is built on over 20 years of experience in traffic control and offers an advanced user interface experience developed in collaboration with traffic controllers. Mipro will also be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the train traffic control system, support services, as well as its ongoing development and life cycle management.
