Nowadays, companies are increasingly striving to operate sustainably and responsibly. Companies are also encouraged to do so by tightening sustainability reporting requirements. Mipro has been committed to the UN Global Compact initiative and has published the accompanying Communication on Progress (CoP) report since 2014. Although the EU’s CSRD directive’s sustainability reporting requirements do not yet apply to companies of Mipro’s size, we are already preparing for future requirements. At the same time, we are ready to respond to inquiries from customers and partners.
Mipro was selected to participate in the Climate Program organised by the Finland Chamber of Commerce, which was specifically aimed at SMEs that had not yet calculated their carbon footprint or were just beginning to do so. The program was held from February 7 to May 2, 2024, and provided, in addition to lectures, tools and expert assistance for carbon footprint calculation, guidance on implementing effective emission reduction measures, and the opportunity to aim for carbon neutrality. After the calculation, Mipro was awarded the Finland Chamber of Commerce’s “Carbon Footprint Calculated” label. This label allows us to make our carbon footprint calculation visible and also demonstrate to our stakeholders that we have calculated our carbon footprint.
During the program, the calculation covered the years 2022 and 2023 and was divided into several designated areas. For Mipro, it was limited to Scope 1, which includes direct emissions from the company’s operations, and Scope 2, which considers purchased electricity, heat, and steam. The calculation covered all our offices in Mikkeli, Oulu, Espoo, and the Mipro Eesti Oü office in Tallinn. Consumption-based data was used as the baseline information. The key sources of Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect upstream and downstream emissions, will be identified and calculated in the next phase.
In 2022, Mipro’s total emissions were 47.86 tCO2e, and in 2023, they were 50.64 tCO2e. The results reflected a change after the COVID-19 pandemic, as meetings with customers became more frequent again.
Sustainability efforts are largely collaborative. Mipro has now taken the first step by identifying and calculating its direct emissions. This is an important step towards emission reduction and potential carbon neutrality, as we have now identified our major emission sources. Going forward, we will focus on determining the emissions of our value chain, including those of suppliers and subcontractors, as well as emissions from business travel. Our aim is also to map the indirect emissions of our operations related to Mipro’s products and services. We hope these measures will strengthen cooperation with subcontractors, suppliers, and customers to reduce environmental impacts.
