The collaboration between Mipro and Savonlinna Vesi began back in 2003, when the automation system at the Vääräsaari surface water plant was updated to Mipro’s system. At the same time, the control system for the Pihlajaniemi wastewater treatment plant was integrated into the system provided by Mipro. Later, the treatment plant’s automation was completely modernised.
From surface water to groundwater
In the 2020s, a project to transition from surface water to groundwater was initiated with the goal of securing Savonlinna’s economic water production. As part of the project, two new groundwater treatment facilities were built, allowing the amount of surface water in total water production to be reduced to a quarter of the original amount. The project improved the quality and stability of the economic water and significantly enhanced the reliability of its supply. This was achieved because there are multiple economic water production facilities, making the overall production less susceptible to disruptions or exceptional situations.
Automation Upgrades in Water Supply and Future Development
In recent years, Savonlinna Vesi and Mipro have carried out several other joint projects. One of these was the integration of Savonranta’s water supply into the existing automation system, which also involved modernising Savonranta’s automation system. The project was divided into two phases: planning and implementation. The planning phase was conducted in collaboration with Savonlinna Vesi, with the primary goal of enhancing water process safety. This goal was achieved by building backup systems for the most critical drinking water production processes. Following the same principle, automation upgrades were also made to the booster pump stations in central Savonlinna. Savonlinna Vesi considered the implementation model to be excellent, further strengthening their long-standing collaboration.
Most recently, Mipro upgraded the automation system at the Pihlajaniemi wastewater treatment plant, extending the facility’s operational capabilities well into the future. The modernisation will support future process improvements aimed at enhancing wastewater treatment results, ensuring compliance with future permit and regulatory requirements.
Looking ahead, Mipro and Savonlinna Vesi plan to deepen their collaboration further, focusing on key areas such as cybersecurity and leakage monitoring, while also prioritising water and environmental safety. Their strong, long-standing partnership provides an excellent foundation for advancing these efforts.
