As a result of competitive tendering, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto) has selected Mipro to deliver a new interlocking system for the Kuopio marshalling yard. The project includes a new ETCS-ready interlocking system for the marshalling yard, including e.g. centralised control of signals and switches and the possibility of local control.
Approximately 9,100 trains stop at the Kuopio marshalling yard every year. The yard serves the line traffic of the Savonia area, the transportation of recycled metals and raw wood in the area, as well as the local corrugated board factory’s deliveries. In its current state, there are major problems due to inadequate track amounts and condition issues: deficiencies in the safety equipment and in the centralisation of switches are very important to fix. In addition, the passenger traffic stabling tracks and maintenance track facilities in the passenger yard are insufficient, in consideration of the need.
“The Kuopio marshalling yard is designed to be functional and serve modern traffic needs. The modern and functional marshalling yard will become part of Kuopio’s already newly developed station area and travel centre. The safety solution that Mipro provides is up-to-date and modern. We expect a functional solution and smooth cooperation with Mipro in Kuopio”, says Project Manager Vesa Ruohomäki from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.
The new interlocking system enables efficient and safe use of the marshalling yard. The system includes an interface to the Centralised Ebiloop Automatic Train Protection system and an interface to the Radio Block Centre, RBC. The RBC interface enables the introduction of a new access control system in accordance with the European ETCS standard in the future. The project started in the spring of 2022 and the commissioning of the new interlocking system will take place during 2024.
“The Kuopio marshalling yard project is a natural continuation in cooperation between Mipro and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. Mipro’s interlocking systems already control several Finnish marshalling yards and we are happy to be part of this project”, says Account Manager Aki Luostarinen from Mipro.
