Mipro Oy and Helsinki Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd have signed an agreement under which Mipro will design and implement an interface between the existing interlocking system of the metropolitan area metro and a new automatic train control (ATC) system. The agreement forms part of the Metro Capacity and Reliability Improvement Project (METKA), in which the metro’s ageing systems will be renewed in phases over the coming years.
The metro interlocking system (CBI) supplied by Mipro, together with the associated traffic control system (ATS), constitutes a key technical foundation of the metro system. These systems were procured and commissioned between 2015 and 2025 and play a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of metro operations. Under the newly signed agreement, Mipro will be responsible for modifications to the interlocking system that will enable the traffic control system, comprising the ATC system and the radio network, to be seamlessly integrated with the existing infrastructure.
The objective of the METKA programme is to improve the metro’s capacity and reliability, among other things by enabling shorter headways and by creating the prerequisites for increasing the level of operational automation in the future. The programme focuses in particular on modernising traffic control systems and ensuring that the metro can safely and efficiently accommodate growing passenger volumes over the long term.
The METKA project is a joint initiative by Kaupunkiliikenne Oy, HKL (Helsinki City Transport), HSL, Länsimetro Oy and the City of Espoo, and is being implemented in cooperation with several suppliers. The train control system is being delivered by CAF Group and the radio network by Telia Finland Oy.
“The agreement represents a significant step in the development of Mipro’s metro automation system solutions (CBTC). Our cooperation with Helsinki Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd and the other project stakeholders continues our long-term efforts to enhance the safety, operational reliability and capacity of the metropolitan area metro,” says Jari Pylvänen, Business Director at Mipro Oy.
