Mipro Oy delivers the interface between the metro interlocking system and the axle counting system

Mipro Oy and Kaupunkiliikenne Oy have signed an agreement under which Mipro will implement modifications to the Helsinki Metro’s signalling and traffic control system. The upgrade is a key part of the METKA programme and aims to ensure the safe and disruption‑free operation of the metro well into the future.

The project will replace the legacy track‑circuit technology in the Helsinki metro network that has reached the end of its service life with a modern axle counter system. The modifications will enable the new axle counter system to be integrated with the existing interlocking through the standardised EULYNX SCI‑TDS protocol interface. These system changes form part of the metro’s track‑circuit replacement project.

Mipro is responsible for the design and implementation of the system interface between the axle counter system and the current traffic control system. The work includes the development of the new protocol interface, all required system modifications, testing and commissioning. The solution will ensure that the new axle counter system is seamlessly integrated into the metro’s existing interlocking system.

The metro’s traffic control and interlocking solutions have been delivered using Mipro’s systems. The forthcoming modifications build on this established technology base and ensure continued compatibility and long‑term system development.

“Through this agreement, Mipro continues its long-standing cooperation with Kaupunkiliikenne to develop the Helsinki Metro. The new SCI‑TDS protocol interface based on the EULYNX standard will reduce the future need for customised solutions, enable the use of axle counters from different manufacturers with the interlocking, speed up installation and commissioning and improve overall system reliability,” says Petteri Turkki, Customer Account Manager at Mipro Oy.

The METKA project is a joint initiative established by Kaupunkiliikenne Oy, the City of Helsinki’s Traffic Division, HSL, Länsimetro Oy, and the City of Espoo. METKA is being delivered in cooperation with several service providers.
