What does responsibility look like at Mipro in 2024?

At Mipro, responsibility is not just a slogan – it’s part of our everyday work. Our solutions help ensure the smooth operation of public transport and the availability of clean water; that’s why reliability and responsibility are integral to everything we do.

In 2024 we focused on practical actions rather than big words. We strengthened our environmental work, developed responsible technology and invested in our people and good governance.

One of the key milestones of the year was completing our first – and most comprehensive – carbon footprint assessment. The calculation covered all three emission scopes defined by the GHG Protocol (Scope 1–3), giving us a clear foundation for future action.

These results not only describe our current state but also help us set realistic and measurable emission reduction targets for the future.

Our environmental working group, established a few years ago, includes representatives from different business units of our company. The group’s role is to share knowledge, identify development areas and ensure that environmental perspectives are part of everyday decision-making.

Even small actions make a difference, especially when they set an example. Our Mikkeli headquarters uses emission-free electricity and district heating. We also continue to reduce travel, promote recycling and encourage other small everyday actions that matter.

Responsibility as a driver of development

At Mipro, responsibility is also deeply embedded in product development. Our goal is to make rail, water and energy systems safer and more efficient.

In 2024 we advanced several projects combining digitalisation, safety and energy efficiency. In the Digirail project, we continued developing our Object Controller (OC) solution to support the modernisation of Finland’s railway network and future control systems through open, standardised interfaces. As part of the same project, we also progressed with the development of the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system, which aims to improve punctuality and reduce energy consumption by, for example, predicting braking distances.

We further developed our traffic control simulator, allowing operators to train safely and test new solutions before deployment. In addition, we continued enhancing our MISONET automation system, now also used in ecological fish farming to optimise energy and water consumption.

At the start of the year we achieved ISO 27001 information security certification – proof that our practices meet international standards. For us, safety and responsibility go hand in hand.

People at the heart of everything

Mipro’s success over more than 40 years is built on skilled and motivated people. In 2024 we focused particularly on leadership, competence development and wellbeing at work.

We launched the MyInsight learning platform, giving every employee the opportunity to learn at their own pace. The platform offers learning paths and shorter training modules that help employees grow their skills and expand their knowledge.

We also expanded our employee benefits, including the sports and culture benefits, a company bicycle scheme and extended occupational healthcare – including dental care.

Over the past decade our team has grown significantly. Today Mipro employs professionals from eight nationalities and our offices buzz daily with conversations in several languages. We see diversity as a strength and want to support international employees and their families in settling in Finland.

Above all, it is important that everyone feels safe at work. Occupational safety is something we are proud of and in 2024 our safety record remained excellent: zero work accidents and only a few minor observations reported during the year.

Governance built on transparency and continuous improvement

Responsible governance ensures that our work remains transparent and consistent. In 2023 our Board of Directors expanded to five members, strengthening our expertise in both sustainability and corporate governance.

Our quality management system and related processes ensure that our operations meet the requirements of both our customers and relevant authorities.

A whistleblowing channel, introduced at the end of 2023, provides employees and stakeholders with a secure and anonymous way to report any concerns. The channel supports transparency, early intervention and compliance with the EU Whistleblower Protection Directive.

Our sustainability and environmental teams meet regularly to ensure that ESG themes are part of our culture – not separate initiatives but a natural part of everyday work.

Towards Practical Responsibility

Today we are a company of around 200 people operating in Finland, Estonia and Sweden. While our global impact may be small, our local impact matters. Every action – from carbon footprint calculations to improving information security – moves us towards more sustainable operations.

We will continue to learn, develop and share experiences with others. Responsibility is not a campaign or a goal – it is our way of working. And every year we aim to be just a little better at it.
